China-Europe rail volume exceeds important milestone of 50,000 TEU monthly

Twice the box volume – 52,500 TEU – was posted for the China-Europe rail route in May than the same month the year before by the United Transport and Logistics Company – Eurasian Rail Alliance (UTLC ERA), a joint venture of Belarusian, Kazakh and Russian railways, reported Hellenic Shipping News.

“Exceeding container traffic of 50,000 TEU per month is an important milestone. The traffic volume of 49,000 TEU was reported as early as May,” said UTLC ERA chief executive Alexey Grom.

7.000 railcars operating in May on the China/Europe railway

Backhaul shipment of laden containers to China in June also doubled to 15,000 TEU while 34,000 TEU were shipped head haul to Europe, more than double last year’s June volume. First half two-way throughput came to 223,000 TEU, up 65 per cent year on year.

“We had more than 100 trains operating daily within our services’ infrastructure, and the total fleet managed by UTLC ERA already amounts to almost 7,000 railcars. We will continue looking for new reserves and growth points,” said Mr Grom.
